In my previous post, I mentioned how my son Michael assisted me in the creation of one of the monsters I drew in 2003. That reminded me of how several years earlier, Michael was quite the little artist. Around the year 2000, I was selling some things on ebay. Michael, who was 5 years old then, asked what I was doing. After explaining how I was making money selling on ebay, Michael said he wanted to sell crayon drawings for money.
I told Michael that I didn’t think people would buy art from a little boy, but he was insistent. He even had a price in mind: $30 per drawing. I said, “How about we list the item for 50 cents.” Well, I listed Michael’s 8.5 x 11 crayon comic art on ebay in the original art comic section and that first crayon drawing sold for a dollar or two, if I remember correctly! I was amazed and Michael was encouraged to draw more.
Over the course of a couple of years, Michael probably made two hundred drawings, some I sold on ebay and others I couldn’t bear to part with since I loved them so much! In fact, I didn’t want to sell any of them….they were so precious! Michael even had commission requests that he made.
One time, an editor from DC Comics bought a Superman drawing. I will have to find the copy I made to post later. At first, I was skeptical if this was really an editor at DC Comics (I wish I could remember his name), but he had me mail the Superman drawing to him at DC Comics in New York City. I had this image of Michael’s Superman displayed somewhere in the halls of DC Comics (…..proud father moment here!)
Michael also had animators at Warner Bros. buy some of his work. They were very kind to send Michael some of their original sketches, including a Bruce Timm original Batman which we, of course, still have.
After a few years, Michael stopped his relentless drawing and his attention fell on soccer and other things. But, I still have those many original crayon drawings and copies of the ones that sold on ebay 10 or so years ago.
Here I have posted two of Michael’s drawings that I keep on the wall in my office….The Hulk in a lightning storm and The Silver Surfer in space surrounded by space monsters! I hope you enjoy Michael’s art. I will need to post more of Michael’s artwork periodically to entertain you! The Hulk and Silver Surfer are copyright by Marvel Comics.
